Woah! Sounds like you guys are having a swell time over there. Jake, you missed a lively 502 discussion on Friday. Aren’t you disappointed? Ha! Have fun!
Looks like a good time is being had by all. It will be great to make connections so that the rest of us at ESLARP-international can begin to be part of the project.
And it looks like Bret needs to get working on the airport so travel isn’t quite so stessful.
I will be traveling to STP soon to review a few projects the US Embassy/Defense Attache has going. I hope to run into you guys and the UT Austin people (Hook’em Horns!)
Thanks for keeping us all up to date. I’m looking forward to hearing about all the details. It’s great to see some of the life of Sao Tome. Remember, you’ll never be able to capture it all on film, but try!
Way to be sporting the Illinois t-shirt, Jake! The updates are great, so thanks a bunch. I’ll have to live the experience vicariously through you guys.
Paul, just been looking at the website and it looks fabulous! By the way, it is now 8 degrees and flurries predicted today. It looks like you are having a wonderful adventure and making a difference at the same time. My best to you and yours, e-mail when you get home and have some time.
Why is everyone going to Sao Tome? Who suggested Sao Tome? Who started this project and why?
More people than you are going there recently.
Does it have anything to do with potential off shore oil, and oil passage from Africa to the US?
The efforts are well taken and African countries could benefit from technological infrastructure building and training. But this is the U of I and it has a history of military involvement. Also an airport seems a strange place for so many librarians to be involved.
Do you know what you are part of? I hope this isn’t more of the US gov. solidifying its military presence in Africa, because we know that is bad news for Africans.
What is really going on in Sao Tome. Can you please post your relationship to government interests? Even if you are not involved with the government, what are project members impressions of US presense in Sao Tome?

“…There has also been discussion in Congress and the Pentagon about increasing military exchanges with West African countries and perhaps establishing a military base in the region, possibly on Sao Tome, an island nation in the Gulf of Guinea.”
As future headquarters for a new regional command, already suggested the enormous US base in the West African island state Sao Tome and Principe which was created in May 2002, which would control the gulf of Guinea and thus oil export from Nigeria. The suggestion came from Israeli-American institutes for the Advanced Strategic & Political Studies [AIPAC], which is interested in the area around the gulf of Guinea, from Liberia to Angola, and above all its wealth at oil, which was predominantly discovered in the last ten years, up to 16 per cent of the oil introduced from the USA comes from the area around the gulf of Guinea.
Good luck on your trip. I hope you have a great time!
Get a tan for me!!!
Goodluck!
Hi,
How was the flight?
The weather forcast for Wisconsin is 12″ of snow this weekend.
A great example of 21st century librarianship!!

This looks like a great adventure. Let us know if they need help starting a Lottery or an Workforce Development Agency.
